Soylent Green

A day pass. 24 hours – that was all the odd couple had at their disposal. The quick-witted rogue and former paladin made for a dangerous pair, not because of their strength but because the moral shackles had been shed and neither preferred the light of day. With one question burning in the reformed arcane armorer mind, Ilidan worked his networks. The shadows of Waterdeep did not disappoint. All roads pointed to Artor Morlin, a very old resident and a suspected masked Lord of Alliance. Lord Morlin remembered the adventurers, even the fumblings of Rolann  at their first encounter. A gracious host at his residing table in the Yawning Portal, Arton shared all.

“Stolen artifacts are a rare crime, even these days.”

“Theft of holy artifacts by lycanthrope and undead spawn usually leads to Shar.”

“Her foul followers can easily be found these days congregating in Skullport.”

Artor’s interests lie down that path as well; a company he set forth had not returned and he suspected Shar. For his help, the lord only asked for one thing in return: information.

Armed and ambitious, Ilidan and Rolann took one of the few path made known to them, finding themselves deep under the City of Splendor. At the Flagon & Dragon, Ka’all noted the coming and goings of outsiders but gave them two strong leads – The Wyrm’s Gullet and The Scent & Stone. The second was closer, and dodging street vendors they made their way to the storefront. S&S promised a scrying for the right amount of coin. Inside they met a gyro-sphinx who was willing to help them find the Artor’s missing agents but before they could begin the store was burst in by agents of Shar herself. Artificer and Rogue swiftly came to arms and proved no match the death cleric and dark knight; in the aftermath, a clue was found – a headdress worn by the preceding adventurers. The imposing scryer sent them down a fruitful road of breadcrumbs, finding another article with a street vendor and then a third at a very morbid sandwich shop with an imposing minotaur butcher in charge.

The drow partook; the human did not. Ilidan didn’t bat an eye when the sloppy joe wound us actually being made from Sloppy Joe.

The trail, no longer bread crumbs but now body parts, led them to an opening carved into the wall at the edge of town. As stealthily as they could, the duo followed the trail, avoiding most conflict and finding signs of Shar everywhere.  The path finally led to a summoning circle with a vampire holding court, wearing the gauntlets from the stolen armor, gone missing so long ago. With vengeance and blood filling his mouth Rolann attacked with Ilidan right behind, and almost their defeated the vampire. Almost. As the nearly defeated vampire dissipated into a mist of nauseous green fog, the duo gave chase; beaten and bloodied, they knew if the vampire made its way back to its crypt they were done for. As they rounded the corner, the sound of six vampires snarling over a bloody feast filled their ears. The blood ran from Rolann’s face and Ilidan pulled hard on his shoulders. As they made a run to escape the Cult of Midnight’s lair, the two found the three missing from Artor’s company. Trussed up for draining and undead slavery, Ilidan and Rolann cut them down and the limping quintet found their way out and back to the surface. Returning to Artor, the lost adventurers now found and the assumed masked lord advised bolstering up forces, perhaps even joining him before chasing the next lead….
