Session 2: Steal, Steel and Surreal
Short Synopsis
From Menzoberrzanzan they left
And started a fight with theft
With a javelin Luka now possessed
Duergars were killed with zest.
Into the dark mines they went
Gagging on a peculiar scent.
They had a really nasty fight
With many a stinky troglodyte.
Gemstones in the mines were taken
Over a lava river they were bakin’
Met by a Nothic with a strange mouth
The creature pointed them south.
Long Synopsis
Baltro, Ermagard and Randen (disguised as Tammy) depart the drow city with the bugbears Gin and Doth and their goblin and svirfneblin slave. Elisandra, Velrik, Naeric and Luka pose as a passing entourage of drow who “happen to heading in the same direction.” Gin and Doth do not object. This odd group encounters a group of duergar merchants. When Luka attempts to take a javelin for Elisandra, they provoke the duergar into a fight. During the fight, Elisandra turns into a giant spider. Luka, Ermgagard, Baltro and Luka unleash violence upon the duergar. After taking substantial injuries, Velrak unleashes his own fury on the duergar’s human slaves. Meanwhile, Randen trails the departing bugbears. The party makes short work of the duergar and takes their riding lizard, wagon and supplies.
They arrive at a mining shaft marked by a river of flowing lava. The group cleared out the 1st mining chamber then moved on to the 2nd chamber where they fought more troglodytes, including a champion. Gin and Doth came in from the cavern floor once the heavy lifting was done and pressured the party to move forward. In the third chamber they found 2 of the magic gems set above a cave mouth in a way that made them look eerily like eyes. The Bugbear Sisters took one gem and the party took one before moving over a bridge across a crevasse.
There, near a river of magma they found the bodies of some gnomes, orcs, and goblins, presumably the remnants of the raiding party that captured the gnome. Once again, the sisters pushed to move forward and cross the narrow causeway over the river of magma. The party began conspiring the best approach to sabotage them as they crossed, but ultimately decided to wait for a better time. Using a variety of methods (and a close call with Baltro), everyone made it to the other side. There they experienced strange whispering in their minds. Pushing forward they came upon an old structure and were greeted by a Nothic and some gibbering mouthers. After befreinding the Nothic, it told the group that they may find more of the gems in the caverns to the south. Elisandra borrowed a book of necromancy for Velrak to read.
